One of the (many) things I love about my job is that I get to do my part in changing the narrative around wedding days and opening up the experience to uncommon ideas! Imagine, you & your person plan an international elopement & make the memories of a lifetime for your wedding abroad. That’s right! Your day can be anything but traditional, because it doesn’t have to be about anyone but YOU. This celebration is about you and your loved one making a lifelong commitment to one another, and doing it internationally gives you the opportunity to make it wholly unique and memorable.
There are so many ways to do a trip like this in an affordable way that still feels like a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Which is why I put together a complete guide on how to elope internationally, with my top spots and recommendations for each beautiful location! Read on for more:

An International Elopement in New Zealand
I was able to explore New Zealand for the first time this year and let me tell ya: it lives up to the hype. I’ve done a decent amount of traveling through this job, and there really isn’t anything like it. Not only is it an incredible travel destination, but I also think it’s especially incredible for an elopement. There is so much variety to the landscape, and each type of scenery is more breathtaking than the last.
Notably, sprawling golden plains underneath towering mountain peaks, nearly neon blue alpine lakes around every corner, rainforests with waterfalls as high as skyscrapers. You’ll feel like you’ve been plopped right into a fantasy movie! The land on this island is also really protected and untouched. Because of this, an elopement here will feel wild and adventurous while still easily accessible. Plus, there’s lots of cute towns and lodging options. If you and your loved one are looking for something laid back, earthy, and jaw-droppingly gorgeous — this is your place!
Best Time to Elope in New Zealand
There are some great spots throughout New Zealand no matter what time of year you choose to visit. However, if you’re wanting full access to outdoor spaces (especially hikes) I’d recommend visiting during their late spring through early autumn seasons. In contrast to the U.S, this is October through April! Furthermore, if (like me) you’re in love with the wildflower splendor in mountain ranges, you can witness the most incredible lupine season from about mid to late-November through late December. These blooms are unreal and will take your breath away when paired with the towering peaks and crystal blue lakes! If you’re wanting to visit the rainforest part of the island (Milford Sound), I’d recommend going anytime from December through January. This is the peak of their rainy season, which is ideal for this area because you’ll see the most spectacular waterfalls flowing down cliffs into the Tasman Sea.

Eloping in Mt Cook/Aoraki
This national park sits in what’s called the Southern Alps, along the southern part of the island. Mount Cook is the tallest mountain in New Zealand. The mountain ranges surrounding it feel straight out of a fantasy movie (the range contains 19 amazing snowcapped peaks!). There are endless viewpoints looking out at vivid blue alpine lakes, massive glaciers, and clear skies filled with stars. The Aoraki/Mt Cook Village is situated beside Lake Pukaki, which has the most incredible water and fields of lupine in the spring.
Eloping in Wanaka
Wanaka is a resort town on New Zealand’s South Island, set on the southern end of its namesake lake with views of snowcapped mountains! It’s the gateway to the Southern Alps’ Mount Aspiring National Park. This wilderness is full of glaciers, beech forests and alpine lakes. Most notably, it’s also home to Roy’s Peak, a challenging but rewarding hike that will give you an unforgettable, panoramic view of the island. The final summit lands you on an amazing ridge that takes you right up to a viewpoint of Lake Wanaka surrounded by mountains.
Eloping in Milford Sound
Indeed, most of New Zealand feels other-worldly and magical. However, Milford Sound truly feels straight out of a fantasy writer’s dream. It’s located in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island, known for the towering Mitre Peak, the most amazing rainforests, and massive waterfalls plummeting down sheer cliffs flowing into the Tasman Sea.

International Italy Elopement
This one may seem a bit obvious, but it’s obvious for good reason! Italy is one of my favorite places to recommend if you’re looking to elope internationally because it is truly one of the most romantic countries. Its culture is so rich. Particularly, I love the focus on intimacy, good food and drink, and the way they embrace the art of slowing down. These people are never in a hurry — which is such a stark contrast to the way we function in the U.S. For this reason, I can’t think of a better vibe for a wedding day.
If you’re choosing an elopement over a traditional wedding, I’m going to assume that you already place a high value on slowing down and taking in the big moments. Italy is the perfect place for that. Furthermore, with the incredible culture, you also have the amazing amenities of their cities. Such as, lots of incredible food, a rich history, and plenty of sightseeing to do before and after you share your vows!
Best Time to Elope in Italy
Parts of Italy can get REAL hot and crowded in the summer, so I’d recommend making elopement plans for one of their shoulder months. This is typically May or October/November. You’ll need to do a bit of research depending on where you go, but I’d say most of the coast and more central spots in Italy are amazing in late spring/early fall. If you’re wanting to explore the mountains of the Dolomites, late May/early June is a beautiful time of year. Additionally, I’d recommend September to avoid the coming snow in the fall!

Eloping in the Dolomites
The Dolomites are such a unique region in Italy. They are located at the most northern part of the country and are a unique blend of Italian and German culture. In fact, you’ll find that most restaurants have the best pizza and an amazing apple strudel. Moreover, the towns themselves have a Bavarian look and feel, and the scenery is breathtaking. Rolling green meadows lead up to snow-capped mountain ranges. It’s a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, with plenty of hikes. There are even hotels/restaurants called “alpine huts” that are only accessible on hikes! Similarly, there are sweet little hotels and Airbnbs with amazing views to relax in front of. Ya can’t go wrong!
Eloping on the Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast is an absolutely stunning coastline in Italy filled with charming beach towns that are endlessly romantic and peaceful. You’ll have endless sights to work with for photos of your day, from giant coastal cliffs, quaint stone alleyways, vibrant architecture, and vivid blue water. This is an unmatched destination for weddings and it’s worth exploring!
Eloping in Tuscany
Tuscany is the perfect elopement location for wine lovers searching for rich culture and a romantic ambiance. It has a really great mix of city and countryside — you can explore the hillsides tasting wine, or venture to the cities of Florence and Rome to experience some of the world’s most incredible food & art museums.

An International Elopement in Mexico
If you’re wanting to go international but would prefer something a bit more affordable and easier to access, then I’d highly recommend looking at spots in Mexico! I’ve done a few elopements here and each one has been so lovely. Namely, there are stunning beaches, gorgeous historical towns, friendly people, and the ideal paradise weather.
The vibrant and relaxed culture throughout the country is such a perfect match for an elopement, and the food/drink here can’t be beat. Depending on where you go, it can be pretty affordable and there are lots of beautiful places to stay (and some cheaper all-inclusive venues!).
Best Time to Elope in Mexico
The December through April time frame is the most popular (lots of tourists escaping the winter!). However, you’ll deal with crowds, so I definitely recommend hitting the shoulder months. This would be any time between October through November. During that time, you’ll still have lovely weather AND have gorgeous beaches to yourself.

Eloping in Tulum
This amazing coastline has everything that makes a beach wedding amazing: white sand beaches, cobalt water, warm breezes, and incredible Mayan ruins to explore nearby. Additionally there are countless aesthetic, boutique lodging options close to the city if you’re wanting less of a tourist-ey resort feel!
Eloping in Todos Santos
Todos Santos is a small coastal town in the foothills of Mexico on the Pacific coast side of the peninsula. It is a quant + historic area, with rich culture and heritage. You’ll find white sand beaches, romantic restaurants, charming cobblestone streets, art galleries, and more to explore in the region around it. Truly one of my favorites!
Eloping in Puerto Vallarta
This area is known for being the more lively destination for wedding! It has a really vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches, and is a great spot for adventuring out for some water activities.

International Iceland Elopement
While there are many beautiful places in the world, there are some that stand out that aren’t just beautiful…they really feel like you’re on a completely different planet. Iceland is one of those places. I love recommending it because the flights there are way more affordable than most of the European destinations, and there aren’t many places with such scenic options for an elopement.
You can exchange vows on the iconic black-sand beaches, in front of one of their many jaw-dropping waterfalls, or on a bluff overlooking the ocean. This is such a great option for couples who want that international feel for their elopement, but without the crazy flight and often less accessible outdoor (and private) spaces.
Best Time to Elope in Iceland
Generally, you’ll want to plan a trip to Iceland in the summer (June and August will give you the best weather) so that you’ll get plenty of sunshine and access to all the outdoor activities this place has to offer. However, there’s also a huge draw to going during other parts of the year: the northern lights! This incredible sight is visible between September and March — which means less ideal weather, but totally worth it.

Eloping on the Black sand beaches
Iceland’s pitch-black beaches are one of the most iconic landmarks and are the perfect place for an elopement. For example, a white wedding dress against that backdrop would make for some remarkable photos! A few of my favorites are Reynisfjara beach in Vik, and Vestrahorn. There are even amazing mountains in the background of Vestrahorn!
Eloping under Waterfalls
The waterfalls of Iceland (Haifoss especially) are famous for reason. Flowing from the glaciers, they tower as high as skyscrapers and thunder down from dark cliffsides, spraying you with a mist as you stand on the mossy vistas. They are a sight to behold, either for vows or an adventure after the ceremony!
Eloping amidst the Icelandic Highlands
In the central region of Iceland, you’ll find the Highlands. You’ll find hot springs, colorful mountainsides, and lots of scenic hikes. The views from the top of them are stunning and exchanging vows on the vistas would be magical!

An International Elopement in Patagonia
To wrap up this guide, I want to mention a spot that’s definitely for the more adventurous couples: Patagonia! Argentina and Chile are such beautiful countries with vibrant, thriving cultures and alllll sorts of breathtaking views. And in Patagonia, the scenery is epic and screensaver worthy — making for a memorable (to say the least) backdrop for your elopement. BUT less adventurous folks beware — this spot is a bit harder to plan around and you’ll definitely need to 1. be in pretty good shape/a seasoned traveler, and 2. very comfortable going with the flow.
Trail access around these mountains is pretty limited, weather can be a little fickle, and there aren’t as many elopement vendors to choose from. These hurdlers are 100% worth it if you’re looking for something a bit more daring/ready for a GREAT story, but definitely keep them in mind as you plan your day!
Best Time to Elope in Patagonia
Weather here is at its absolute best during the summer months, which run from December through the end of February! You’ll get beautiful temperatures, easier access to outdoor spaces, and still not much in the way of crowds since Patagonia is a pretty remote area.

Eloping in Torres Del Paine
This massive, mountainous national park in southern Patagonia is known for its scenic glaciers, beautiful lakes, lush forests, and the three iconic granite peaks of Paine Massif. It is truly a hiker’s paradise, so you’ll definitely want to be in shape and ready for an adventure if you check it out!
Eloping under Fitz Roy
Standing at 11,000 ft (same as Mt. Rainier for you PNW folks), Fitz Roy is one of the most majestic mountains in Patagonia — a jagged wonder standing above alpine lakes and massive glaciers. It is a sight to behold and is worth a visit or sharing your vows in front of!
Eloping on Tierra del Fuego
Tierra del Fuego is an archipelago at South America’s southernmost tip, shared by Chile and Argentina. It’s known for its dramatic landscape of snowy mountains, glaciers, tundra and wind-sculpted trees. Its main island, Isla Grande, is home to the Argentine resort town of Ushuaia. It’s also home to penguin colonies!!! That on its own is a perfect reason to visit.
As I wrap up this guide on international elopements, I just want to say again: you don’t have to be intimidated by a wedding day that involves a bit of travel! Going somewhere brand new and immersing yourself in a different culture is such an amazing way to enter into a new chapter with your loved one, and I hope that this guide makes it seem a little more doable and a lot more exciting. You deserve a unique, memorable day that is unlike anything else you’ve experienced!
