They don’t call the North Cascades the “American Alps” for nothing! This place is straight up jaw-dropping and I’m so excited to share my North Cascades elopement guide so you can learn how to share your vows in this magical place. There is something so distinct and iconic about the way the Cascades’ peaks tower over you and huddle around cute mountain towns, as well as alpine lakes in the most incredible shades of blue.
It’s also just the ideal elopement location if you’re imagining a picturesque PNW experience. It has easy access to some of the best views in the state (promise I’m not too biased here), lots of hiking options ranging from a short stroll to a more strenuous adventure, and both national forest and national park access — giving you a range of options when it comes to regulation AND ability to bring along your furry friends. 🙂

What makes a North Cascades elopement picture-perfect?
I know I’ve already harped a bit on the majesty of these mountains, but I think it’s worth saying again: it would be easy to confuse the Cascades with the Alps. The ruggedness of the snowcapped peaks, the almost neon blue of the waters below, and the green and peaceful landscape surrounding the mountain range make you feel like you’ve been transported to another country. I also never get tired of seeing the volcanoes of the northwest, and Mt. Baker is particularly stunning. There’s also a reason that the waters here are so vividly blue! The lakes and rivers in the Cascades are glacial fed, meaning they are filled by massive glaciers like the ones on the face of Mt. Baker. And when these glaciers move, they create sediment that adds an almost milky cerulean color to the waters around it. I know, a nerdy geological moment, but cool right?? Just another reason that this area is an unforgettable background for sharing your vows!
Best Time of Year for an Elopement in the North Cascades
Trying to figure out the best time to elope in a wild, outdoor space is NOT for the faint of heart. It always looks like the perfect weather and scenery in all the photos you see…but what time of year does it actually look like that? Thankfully, I’ve had my fair share of mistakes and successes to know when the best time to explore the Cascades is. It’s easy to assume snow will be cleared out by June (hello, Summer) but since it’s such a high elevation, sometimes it’s not fully melted out until the end of July or early August in some areas. And unfortunately, there’s always a chance that wildfires will hit the northwest from mid/late August through September. SO my sweet spots for an elopement would be early/mid-August or the end of September/early October for the gorgeous fall foliage. I also love the abundant wildflowers you’ll find throughout the mountains (fireweed is my personal favorite) in August!
Park Access & Best Trails
Eloping in North Cascades National Park
One of the most iconic places in the North Cascades National Park is Diablo Lake! This is a great spot to go if you aren’t necessarily a hiking fan, because everywhere you look there’s an incredible view. The lake itself has that unique glacial runoff, making the water the most vivid blue. It’s also really accessible and perfect for activities like kayaking or stand up paddle boarding!
If you’re ready for a little exertion, Maple Pass is for you! It’s a difficult-rated 7 mile hike, but the payoff is incredible. It has some of the most jaw dropping mountain views in the whole state.
And another easy, accessible spot? Washington Pass. No hike here, just more 360 views of the surrounding peaks that make an unreal background while you share your vows.
Eloping in Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest
If you’re wanting to go the national forest route (no permit and dog friendly!), I would highly recommend Picture Lake! It’s an easy, paved walk with an amazing reflection of Mt. Shuksan — one of the largest peaks in the mountain range, making a pretty majestic sight.
Another great option on the easy side is Artist Point to Huntoon Point! It’s just 1.5 miles with another reflection of Mt. Shuksan and some bonus views of Mt. Baker, as well.
And finally, I love recommending Winchester Mountain if you’re looking for more of a moderate hike! It’s only 3 miles and takes you to a fire lookout with (in my humble opinion) some of the most incredible mountain views in Washington.
Places to Stay in the North Cascades
There are a few really sweet towns for lodging outside of the North Cascades! First, check out my curated Airbnb list for North Cascades National Park here. My favorite spot is Winthrop — it’s a little western themed town with a ton of character!
For the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest area, take a look at my Airbnb list here. My top recommendations are Glacier and Deming, since they serve as perfect adventure home bases for the area and are a couple of cute little mountain towns with a TON of cabins to rent.
Permits & Fees
I love how many options there are for couples exploring the North Cascades! If you’re wanting to see the national park, you’ll need a special use permit, which you can find on their website here. BUT if you’re ok with Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest (just as beautiful and accessible), there aren’t any required permits…and it’s dog friendly! 🙂

+ Bug spray! Mosquitos can get quite rampant in the summer
+ A few warm layers, since alpine conditions can change quickly
+ Hand warmers
+ Rain jacket! Washington weather can change in an instant
+ Clear umbrella for photos if it rains
+ Hiking boots
+ Any special national park details: elopement sign, park map, postcard, etc.
+ Elopement details: vow books, rings/ring box, flowers, etc.
+ Snacks for the trail
+ Kayaks or Stand up Paddle Boards for water activities
+ Elopement Picnic (have a mini *reception* just the two of you with a packed picnic! I offer a curated basket with all utensils to all PNW elopement couples, just bring your fav picnic food!)
+ An adventurous spirit!
